Super Bowl Food Porn Judged On WCIU!

Screen Shot 2017-02-04 at 14.15.31It’s Super Bowl weekend, y’all. And if you’re still looking for the perfect dish to cook for the big game today, well, I may just be able to help you out.

As you know, I have made the move to Chicago and am loving every minute of it. A week ago, I had a meeting with Rudy from WCIU, a TV producer of the highest quality and caliber. He mentioned that they were running a chef week for Superbowl and would I want to come on the morning show to judge. Of course!

Come to a city, immediately get on television.¬†Isn’t that how it works with everyone?

They were running it like Chopped, where two of the area’s best chefs competed to make a dish in about an hour using a secret ingredient. This time, they were all going to be Super Bowl themed-items, food you’d find at the big game party. And we were to judge on presentation, originality and flavor.

IMG_2192The segment was going to start at 7am, so I had to be there for 6:45am. Blarg. But when two fo the cities’¬†best chefs are cooking for you, that’s worth getting up for, right? So I didn’t even mind, and was, in fact, flattered¬†when they then asked me back again for Wednesday and Friday.¬†

And then as I was leaving on Wednesday, Rudy turns to me and goes, “Can you do tomorrow as well?”

Sure can, buddy.

So my made-for-radio face was on TV a lot this last week, and I ate and judged like a monster. I also got to meet some fantastic people that week who judged alongside me, including Kat from A Girl and Her Food, Lakesha from Rose Phillps Online, Johanna from Momma Cuisine and the powerhouse that is Madam X from The Kit Kat Club.

And luckily, I can now share you not only the clips and pics, but the dishes as well, to give you a little inspiration. It’s sure to make your Super Bowl party a touchdown game winning insert more sports analogies here.

DAY ONE

Secret Ingredients: Tortilla Chips!

Dishes:

IMG_2143Judgment:
While I normally love chilaquiles, the tortilla chips were just a little too soggy, and since they were the main ingredient, I had to pull points. But the nachos here were incredibly crispy, so flavourful, and the radishes on top made my day. I had to go with it as the winner.

Winner: Chef Malika.

DAY TWO

Secret Ingredients: BBQ Sauce!

Dishes:

Judgment:
My god this was tough. That taco was truly incredible, the meat, the flavor, the BBQ sauce – perfect. But I had to go with the cornbread muffin, which was equally amazing all up in my mouth, due to presentation and originality.

Winner: Chef Zoe.

DAY THREE

Secret Ingredients: Chocolate Pudding Cups!

Dishes:

  • Mexican Chicken and Waffles with crushed cocoa, ground almond, cinnamon and sugar, with fried chicken with flour, chocolate bread crumbs and pretzel bread crumbs by Chef Mariela Bolanos of¬†MAD social.
  • A Deconstructed Football Whoopie Pie with br√Ľl√©ed marshmallow fluff and Patriot sprinkles by Chef Addison Smith, winner of Master Chef Junior.

Judgment:
Now, I normally hate whoopie pies (blarg), but damn if Chef Addison’s wasn’t the perfect blend of sweet and light. She really killed it. However, the chicken and waffles stopped my heart a little bit, and I had to go that way because… well, just look at it.¬†

Winner: Chef Mariela.

DAY FOUR

Secret Ingredients: Hot Dogs

Dishes:

A Hot Dog with a New England style bun, Boston baked beans, Georgia fried pork and slaw by Chef Craig Couper from Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse.

Stuffed Mushrooms with hot dogs, mascarpone cheese, black truffle and a basil pesto by Chef Zach Walrath from The Florentine.

Judgment:
Now, mushrooms are a personal favorite of mine, so I went in thinking this was going to be the winner. And they were soft and packed with flavor and I wanted to devour them in two bites. However, I’m a New England boy, so having a New England role played right into my heart. And as I said in the clip, I really do love when a chef can take the ordinary and make it unordinary, so I had to vote with my heart and vote hot dog.¬†

Winner: Chef Craig.

Thanks everyone for reading/watching and thanks WCIU for having me! More Chicago fun to come.
