Feeling Fancy at Walton’s Fancy & Staple

Isn’t it nice to eat in a garden?

Isn’t it awful to be eaten by bugs and suffer 100 degree slowly melt the top of your head heat as you try to eat in a garden.

Well, I got to experience the nearly-next best thing the other day: a happy hour in Walton’s Fancy & Staple.

WALTON’S WHAT NOW?

Why, Walton’s Fancy & Staple of course. This small cafe and bakery also doubles as a flower and plant shop and it’s pretty much as delightful as you think it might be.

Here’s what they say about themselves:

Welcome to Walton’s Fancy & Staple, Austin’s most cherished deli, known for fresh-baked breads, gourmet sandwiches and decadent sweet treats. Housed in a historic building on famed Sixth Street, Walton’s also features unique gifts and wares, and a floral shop filled with a colorful variety of flowers and succulents.

Walton’s was first established in 1969 as Walton’s Florist and Nursery, and was a treasured fixture in the city of Westlake Hills for 40 years. In 2009, Walton’s found a new home in Austin’s Market District where the professional bakery and delicatessen has garnered legions of fans.

Can’t argue with that?

Also it’s apparently owned by Sandra Bullock, so that’s pretty neat right now.

WHAT DID YOU EAT:

We tried a sampling of their happy hour cuisine, which made some some seriously delicious eats. These included:

cheese & asparagus tart

camembert, cheddar, onion-raisin compote

petite croque-monsieurs

tenderbelly ham, gruyere, béchamel, herb aioli, pain au levain

fancy frites

parmesan, parsley, herb aioli

watermelon salad — house made farmers cheese, arugula, mint, tahini vinaigrette, sesame seed

smoked salmon tartar

apple, caper, dill, chevre labneh, challah toast

And of course to drink:

609 paloma

tequila, blood orange liquor, lime juice, jarritos grapefruit soda, simple syrup

salty melon

watermelon, gin, lime juice, jalapeno, smoked sea salt

HOLD UP, WHAT ABOUT THAT DAMN BAKERY

Ah, the bakery. And what a joy it is.

After you notice all the plants in the area, you can’t help but notice the glowing angelic counter that is the bakery, filled with sweets the likes of which make you oh so happy. We had fun just looking at them.

However, we had even more fun eating them:

DID WE MENTION IT’S A FLOWER SHOP

Because it is. All around the cafe.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU ENJOYED

I really loved the atmosphere of this place, simple and botanical, it was really easy to stay relaxed from the moment we walked in till the time we went back through the door.

The staff were friendly, the jazz music was excellent, the coffee was strong and the food good. What more could you want?

Located on a pretty rowdy street (when we walked out of the cafe, four dudes were leaning against my car, using the roof as a cup holder. Joy.), this oasis from the insanity is just what you need. Pull up a chair and literally smell the roses here, it is worth it.

Walton’s Fancy & Staple is located at Address: 609 W 6th St, Austin, TX. You can find more here.
